Anyone who knows me knows of my love of coffee. Coffee has grown into a hobby of mine. When I learned what truly good coffee is, I knew that I wanted to learn how to make it. Coffee brewing is vastly complicated, far beyond what type of coffee bean you use (but that play’s a big part in it). I have heard it said that a mediocre barista can make great coffee taste meh but a great barista cannot make mediocre coffee great. I say all this to explain why I am writing about this particular coffee shop. My fascination with coffee has led me to Seattle, Portland, Santa Cruz, Los Altos, Napa, Oakland, and of course San Francisco. So why Ritual Coffee? Ritual coffee has the unique blend (see what I did there *wink wink*) of extremely high quality coffee, brewing expertise, and the creativity necessary to make their coffee stand out. Today I am going to highlight three of their unique locations that really define the ritual to me (see what I did there again.) The Mothership: 1026 Valencia St. SF, CA Where the magic happens. Beans get roasted here and this is where the biggest staff base is. This coffee shop is a great place to work, sit and catch up with friends, or grab a quick drink to go as you explore the Mission District. This site also has special coffee roasting method cards. Basically, the good folks at Ritual took every popular method of brewing coffee (I’m not talking about Keurig and Coffee machines here) and made instructional cards. They include bean amount, what consistency the grind should be, water temp, you name it. Best part? They are free! Take them all. The designs are flawless and make for great decorations for all coffee lovers. Lastly, this location has the most access to the cup recycling program. For a two dollar deposit they give you a Ritual Coffee branded mason jar with your coffee. The mason jar gives you a discount on every cup of coffee you get and when you don’t want it any more simply return it for your money back. That is a next level loyalty program. The Hidden Gem: in Flora Grubb Gardens 1634 Jerrold Ave, SF, CA
A smaller shop out in Hunter’s Point, this location is nestled in the back of a garden store. But not just any garden store, a hipster garden store with old cars converted into terrariums, hanging bike planters, unique handmade garden furniture and more. After you explore the gardens, grab a coffee, sit down in the bed of a truck (on a wooden deck build out of the truck bed I should say) and enjoy. This location may be out of the way but it is definitely worth the extra drive. The Outpost: at Proxy 432b Octavia St, SF, CA Located inside of a shipping container in a small plaza this location can be easy to miss. the Plaza doesn’t have parking and can be difficult to get to but this puts you right in the heart of the city. Many craft fairs and urban markets are hosted here, making it the perfect pit stop on your early morning adventuring. After you are done you can get nitrogen ice cream or macaroons if you are feeling frisky. A fantastic addition to the Ritual family, this location allows for a refuel on the go with less lines than the other locations. Picnic table seating outside makes for a lovely sunday afternoon. Whatever location you end up going to, I know that you will enjoy it! I usually go with cold brew coffee but their espresso is fantastic as well! Enjoy and happy (coffee) drinking!
