Muffins, the longtime champion of the breakfast pastry game, has seen unprecedented innovation in San Francisco. November 8th was Muffin Sunday for Lynn and I, as we tried two of the more unique muffin creations the city had to offer. Top: Coffee Cream Cruffin, Bottom: Ferrero Rocher Choux Bomb Mr. Holmes Bakehouse, Lower Nob Hill, San Francisco, CA Above is the beautifully designed and foiled box of Mr. Holmes Bakehouse. I could not have been more surprised by this hole in the wall bakery. We arrived just before 8am joining the handful of others who were waiting anxiously for their morning pastries+coffee. The beautiful box modeled above by yours truly is free with the purchase of 6 pastries. Here is the catch, they limit each person to two cruffins (croissant muffins) each. Cruffins don't come out of the oven until 9am, while the rest of the bakery opens at 8am. So we did the logical thing, we bought pre-cruffin pastries! I had the potato and leek danish with cheese. Sounds strange, but it was incredible. Flaky and warm with loads of different flavors packed into a small pastry. Lynn is hand modeling her pastry, the Ferrero Rocher Choux Bomb. A macaroon like pastry with Ferrero Rocher cream and a wedge of toffee. From what she told me, it was pretty good, but not nearly as good as the cruffins that would come next. We waited patiently in line to get our hands on the top most picture's contents, four Coffee Cream Cruffins (Hey! CCC loves CCCs'!). Warm flaky pastries layers that seemed never ending gave way to cool creme with a rich coffee flavor. We ate two on the spot and saved two for our breakfast the next day. The Rebel Within, Craftsman & Wolves, Mission District, San Francisco, CA Next on our muffin adventure was The Rebel Within, a creative savory muffin from Craftsman & Wolves. This awesome restaurant is located in the Mission District, one of our favorite neighborhoods to shop and dine in. We had come here before for this muffin, but they were sold out. We were in luck on Muffin Adventure Sunday!
The Rebel Within is a bread muffin with sausage bits, vegetables, and a fried egg hidden deep within. The staff heat up the muffin to make the egg just ever so runny and serve it along with a small vial of pink Himalayan salt. Every bite is a complex range of flavors and textures. It is warm and soft, with small crunches of salt, savory bites of meat and egg, with a little kick at the end too. Pop in here for a quick snack while you peruse the shops (We recommend Paxton's and the Pirates of Valencia!). Hope you enjoyed this post, and hopefully enjoy some muffins soon too! Until next time, happy muffin-ing!
