Panoramic Point, King's Canyon National Park What would you get up at 4am for? The latest camping trip that Lynn and I took (the first of our married lives!) was to Sequoia and King's Canyon National Park. So why 4am? Well, we have realized there is about a three hour window of great lighting in both the pre-sun hours and right before it sets. Once the harsh sunlight hits the canyon walls, (good) photography is impossible. Saturday and Sunday saw us waking up long before our normal alarms so we could wake up and start chasing the sun. Moro Rock, Sequoia National Park Day 1:
The first hike was up Moro Rock to catch the Saturday sunrise. A few others had the same idea so we had to get creative to find space to photograph the skyline before sunrise. The mountain range is absolutely beautiful and it looks magical if you look at how the soft morning light shifts the hues of the mountains into different shades of blue. The long wait, and relatively short hike was worth it, as we got these gems out of it. The backlight was tricky to capture, and it only was available for about 5 minutes but it looks great on Lynn's new hat! Dorst Creek Campground, Sequoia National Park Next, we headed back to camp for some morning coffee. I finally found the time to put in some practice with my Aeropress last week, just in time to bring it camping. There is something about a hot drink on a cold morning that just braces you. One of my favorite additions to our camping trip was some guava ginger beer from GingerLab! We had a great time taking some product photos and the spice from the ginger warmed me up at night. Tharp's Log, Sequoia National Park Of the few non-sunrise trips that we took, we particularly enjoyed Tharp's log, a lean to cabin that was made in a hollowed out log by John Muir himself! I find myself more and more attracted to his works these days, especially with his hand in the creation of the National Parks System. To celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the National Parks System, we took a tour of Crystal Caves. I wasn't expecting much, but this was a truly magical experience In the deepest part of the cave, with nearly 300 feet of rock above us. We turned off the lights and just listened. You could hear water drops and the faint sound of breathing. There was a stillness and a darkness in that cave I have never experienced before. Definitely on my list to do it again. Crystal Caves, Sequoia National Park King's Canyon Overlook, King's Canyon National Park Round two of chasing the sun found us doing some early morning night photography while we played with light, and early morning hikes featuring Hume Lake! This trip was less structured than our usually trips and I enjoyed every minute of wandering. Hope you had a good weekend and until next time, happy wandering!
